The Road Map Planning Working Group has held one meeting, at which a popular organization tool
"The SWOT Analysis" was introduced.
One of the "exercises" in "strategic planning" is to discuss a group's
"STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES, OPPORTUNITIES, and THREATS",
analysis which is commonly called SWOT.
Below is the list of thoughts given at the first Road Map Planning Meeting from Sunday 12/11.

The next Roadmapping meeting is scheduled for 11:30 am at Ecuentro 5, 33 Harrison, Boston. We will be breaking up into small workgroups and gathering more SWOT information. And then consolidating it into a "group summary", in case people want to use the work as a reference point moving forward.

One part of this meeting will be to discuss the next steps for the Roadmapping group. See this link for ideas for these next steps Roadmapping Next Steps.

About Sustainable Economy
Our current economic system is becoming more and more disconnected and unsustainable, socially, fiscally, and environmentally. While it serves the needs of some, it fails to serve, and even oppresses the needs of others. We see this as unfair, unstable, and unsustainable and we believe that it does not have to be that way. Our goal is to transition toward a societal structure which can become more fair and economically equal over time. Our goal is to create an economy that works for everyone, in harmony with the laws of nature.

A "sustainable economy" is an economy in which success is judged, not merely in terms of financial profit, but in accounting for social and environmental factors as well. This is known, in the business world, as the "triple bottom line". All factors must be present in judging the success of an enterprise. If one element is failing, the whole entity is failing and the system is in danger of collapse. Many businesses are adopting a triple bottom line philiosophy as a more holistic approach to assessing value and determining success for the long term. See more on triple bottom line philosophy

Our success, as humans and as a society, should be measured in terms of individual prosperity, quality of life, our ability to minimize suffering, and of the "thrive-ability" of life on the planet.
The US corporate structures and the domination structures of government are structures which disregard the overall health of the planet, and has very limited, short term sights on the health of the economy.

Stock exchanges around the world are all geared primarily toward profit. In fact, it is US corporate law which *requires* publicly traded corporations to pursue profits above all else. We believe there should be more to business than just profit.

Goals of this working group (draft!)
- EXPLORE the meanings of the word "sustainability" and

- CREATE AWARENESS within the Occupy Boston Community and the Boston region about the various ideas of what a "sustainable economy" might look like, so as to help ensure that OB statements and actions encourage society's move to a more sustainable society

- DISCUSS detailed practices and positions that will send the message regarding change that we believe is productive.

- DETERMINE legislative, individual practices that we believe strongly in. This task includes ECONOMIC MODELING of proposed practices/policies.

- ENCOURAGE Business and Government leaders, and Occupy Boston Working Groups to enjoy sustainable business practices.

- ADVOCATE with key public officials and the media to encourage the use of a more productive language that helps society both understand sustainability, and and move toward changes that we support.

Ways to make the economy more sustainable
1. Set of ethical business practices to evaluate businesses by.

2. Harmful companies to boycott and divest from.

3. An interactive shopping guide, Responsible Shopper, from Green America helps you figure out which companies to buy from and invest in.

4. A searchable directory of ethical businesses at Green America's National Green Pages to buy from and invest in.

5. Green Business Seal of Approval from Green America.

6. Directories of local businesses to support. (Buy Local)

10. Books, articles, and other resources analyzing economic problems and offering solutions.

Possible Projects to Work On
1. Organize a day to divest-reinvest, such as Community Reinvestment Day. People can choose to either divest from all corporations on Wall Street or only from particularly harmful corporations. Encourage supporting socially responsible investment firms for those wishing a more traditional route.

2. Feature and honor people who make public announcements of divesting in Wall Street harmful businesses and investing in ethical businesses and local businesses on Main Street.

3. Collaborate with local banks, and credit unions to form special funds for community reinvestment. The local bank or credit union would make loans from these funds to local businesses and non-profits that meet certain criteria of ethical behavior, such as serving the local community. The community investors would receive a financial return on their investments.

Restorative Justice (also sometimes called "reparative justice") is an approach to justice that focuses on the needs of the entire community, including the victims and offenders, instead of satisfying abstract legal principles or focusing on punishing the offender.

Victims take an active role in the process, while offenders are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions, "to repair the harm they've done...by apologizing, returning stolen money, or community service". Restorative justice involves both victim and offender and focuses on their personal needs. In addition, it provides help for the offender in order to avoid future offenses. It is based on a theory of justice that considers crime and wrongdoing to be an offense against an individual or community, rather than the state. Restorative justice that fosters dialogue between victim and offender shows the highest rates of victim satisfaction and offender accountability.

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behavior. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that include all stakeholders.

Restorative Justice is Practice
These practices include:

*Victim-Offender Dialogue
*Family Group Conferencing
*Community/School Conferencing
*Peacemaking Circles
*Reparative Boards
*Truth/ Reconciliation Commissions
*Victim Impact Panels
*Restorative Community Service
*Restitution
*Victim Support/Services
*Reintegration Services

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by:

1. identifying and taking steps to repair harm,
2. involving all stakeholders
3. transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime.

According to Zehr and Mika (1998), there are three key ideas that support restorative justice. First is the understanding that the victim and the surrounding community have both been affected by the action of the offender and, in addition, restoration is necessary. Second, the offender's obligation is to make amends with both the victim and the involved community. Third, and the most important process of restorative justice, is the concept of 'healing.' This step has two parts: healing for the victim, as well as meeting the offender's personal needs. Both parties are equally important in this healing process to avoid recidivism and to restore a sense of safety for the victim. Various methods of restorative justice are practiced; examples include victim offender mediation, conferencing, healing circles, victim assistance,ex-offender assistance, restitution, and community service. Each method focuses on the needs of both the offender and the victim, and heals in different ways.

Restorative justice principles are characterized by four key values: first, the encounter of both parties. This step involves the offender, the victim, the community and any other party who was involved in the initial crime. Second, the amending process takes place. In this step, the offender(s) will take the steps necessary to help repair the harm caused. Third, reintegration begins. In this phase, restoration of both the victim and the offender takes place. In addition, this step also involves the community and others who were involved in the initial crime. Finally, the inclusion stage provides the open opportunity for both parties to participate in finding a resolution. The process of restorative justice is lengthy and must be committed to by both parties for effective results.
Working groups are open, which means anyone can help out, including you!
Restorative Justice (also sometimes called "reparative justice") is an approach to justice that focuses on the needs of victims, offenders, as well as the involved community, instead of satisfying abstract legal principles or punishing the offender. Victims take an active role in the process, while offenders are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions, "to repair the harm they've done—by apologizing, returning stolen money, or community service".

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by:

 1. identifying and taking steps to repair harm,
2. involving all stakeholders, and
3. transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime.

Concerns Data
The Ideas Group has begun the process of surveying occupiers from all over Massachusetts to get answers to the question, "What are the concerns/problems that brought you to the Occupy Movement?" This is a preliminary outline of the data we have collected so far. If you share a concern on the outline, please add an X next to it. If you have a concern not listed on the outline, please add it. The Ideas Group would like to begin to prioritize these concerns based on your responses so that we can start holding concerns-based open discussions. It is our hope that working groups will form out of these discussions, and that from there we can start to build solutions.
PROPOSAL PASSED at GA 11/29/11
Proposal for the General Assembly at Occupy Boston from the Statement of Purpose Working Group November 29, 2011

Declaration of Occupation
We, the people of Occupy Boston, have occupied Dewey Square in the heart of the financial district, in order to express dissent over the state of our political and financial systems. We are practicing a form of horizontal participatory democracy in the shadows of anti-democratic institutions that dominate our government and our lives. Through our occupation, we are creating an exemplar society in which no one's human needs go unmet.

The Occupy Movement has started a nationwide conversation about the realities of economic inequality and the meaning of Constitutional rights. We are committed to living the values of transparency, equality, accountability, awareness, sustainability, and compassion as we struggle against corporate predation, injustice, and oppression. We are actively seeking to include the diverse voices of the 99%. Together, we set a precedent and provide a foothold for people to demand a truer, more horizontal democracy, in which greed has no influence.

Regardless of media spin, police brutality, or sub-zero temperatures, we will continue to peacefully exercise our first amendment rights by occupying, holding general assemblies, and planning for the American Spring. Our goal is a society that prioritizes the needs of all before the profits of the few. We are the 99%.

Friday, 18 November
*Went through the new process for GA meetings put forth by the facilitators group. The mock topic was a proposal to add a values statement to the Statement of Purpose.
*Here is the feedback from the procedure:
**Facilitators need to be the ones writing on the whiteboard
**Process needs to keep going and sometimes be changed in order to figure out how to move forward.
**It may be that the best model for GA is not for people to propose a document that should be ratified, rather to propose the discussion of a document.
**Some people were lost during the discussion due to the new nature of the process.
**There is confusion in the new process of what happens after amendments had been made. This seems like a delicate point in the process.
**We still do not have a way for the GA to create a proposal.
**It may be beneficial for the facilitator, in the fly, to guide the synthesis of what GA is saying, and change the process as it needs to happen. This is tricky because the facilitators cannot help being biased. Another way is to have a very polished process that can handle many scenarios, but how to find that process?
**The new method does activate people's minds more - it tapped into the "creative capitol" of the GA better.
**we found that at one point the process did not fit the need of what we needed to do anymore at one point.
**There was a desire from many to keep the procedure fluid and adaptable somehow. Hopefully that fluidity can be written into the process (catch-22?)
**the facilitators need to have and be trusted with an extensive toolbox of process that will allow the fluidity of the discussion.
**It was noted that you are always giving your freedom up to the process, or a facilitator, or the loudest voice in GA. We are picking.

Wednesday, 16 November
*Announcement/Get the word out about Occupy Declaration: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99_Percent_Declaration
*Proposal to create an information card for how to discuss the Occupy movement with families on Thanksgiving. The information card could give suggestions on how to talk about Occupy, but also remind to collect ideas from family members which can then be brought back to the camp for discussion.
*Discussion of possibly wording statements so that they are not as inclusive, by using words like "most of us", etc. Debated whether this is a good strategy, no position was taken.
*Discussion on the purpose of statements of purpose, and how it can guide its development. Mention that it can act as a guide to how we live responsibly with each other in the camp (internal purpose), and how we may bring people into solidarity with the movement (external), or how it will guide our actions as we move forward (intermal/external).
**Also it is noted that most of the good work that is done within Occupy Boston needs no Statement to happen, and that a multitude of different occupy movements have a wide range of different statement sizes, breadth, meaning, or do not have any statements at all. No position was taken, however it was consented on that if we did draft a potential proposed Values statement, it might mention the internal and external purposes. (Note: google doc of all Occupy statement's movements here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RsPuWV2D8UjB-N5WrmxZM7QxGJIABHON-ya3YtGawx0/edit)
*Discussion of what the proposal that we will raise at the facilitation testing of the new GA process on Friday. We decided that it will be to propose that a values statement to be added to the Statement of Purpose.
*Discussion of what values to start off the discussion will be (Tess has the list, i forgot to write it down)
*Decision to set the date of the GA for the real proposal is Tuesday Nov 22.
*Decision to table the discussion of the whitehouse.gov/petition discussion of what petition to create until Sunday's Ideas meeting.
*Decision for a topic of discussion for an Ideas Public Discussion sometime after the Summit:
*Discussion of all of the Authors that have drafted Mission Statements, Declarations of Occupation, etc. to offer their ideas to the public and garner feedback in a discussion format.

Friday, November 4
Facilitator: Marty Facilitator: Forest Minutes: Mallory Stack Taker: None

The discussion followed this format:

*Introduction (10 minutes)
*Breakout Group Formation (individuals on stack) (20 minutes)
*Group Discussions (45 minutes)
*Group Stack/Presentations (10 minutes per group x 3 groups = 30 minutes)
*Conclusion/Summary

Breakout groups were formed after an opening discussion about what people wanted to talk about. The three breakout groups were:

*Local Issues
*Occupy as Paradigm Shift
*Functional divisions in the movement and occupy boston (i.e. offline/online, onsite/offsite)

Some noted questions/comments that resulted at the end of discussion:

*How does occupy reach into rural areas? Also, what about occupy gardens/farms?
*How to include people whose time is filled with work obligations (i.e. how to occupy time the same way we are currently occupying space)?
*"laboratory space" to describe our ideas discussions.

Two functional issues with discussion format identified by facilitator (Forest) were:

*Breakout groups for the most part lacked facilitation, stack taker, timekeepers, or minute recorders. In the future groups should ideally follow an established process for discussion.

*People who tended to agree seemed to clump together in the smaller groups. Maybe experimenting with starting groups with members randomly assigned and *then* applying law of two feet would be worthwhile? Also, instructing group initiators to make sure their group has someone taking stack?
