Outreach Committee
Meeting Minutes
10/3/11
Convened at roughly 6:05pm.
Pitch: Break up into 4 working groups focused on priorities:
- University/Campus Communities
- Union/Labor
- Community Organizations
- Neighborhoods
The issue of contacting small businesses was brought up. This job will be handled by the Neighborhood Working Group.
Housekeeping items:
- We may be moving the Outreach Tent more towards the South Station side of the encampment.
- We need to STAFF THE TABLE
- Outreach to virtual community was brought up. At this point we asked the group if everyone was on the Google Group. Those in attendance who are not provided their email addresses.
(Note: These email addresses were emailed to Nicole and will be added ASAP)
At this point an agenda was created for the meeting. I was kind of running around trying to gather emails so missed a bit but the items were as follows:
- Establish a calendar
- Establish consensus on the 4 working groups
- Create some kind of sign up system for TABLING
Calendar went unaddressed.
4 working groups were agreed upon and we all split up.
Working groups met for the remainder of the hour (roughly 30 minutes).
After this, the GA started.

Working Group Updates
Union/Labor
- SEIU Local 615 is the latest union to verbalize support. Members of outreach attended a meeting at their headquarters tonight and received overwhelming support. Many of the local’s members work cleaning bank buildings and offices. They will not be wearing pins while on the job that say “We are the 99%.”
- They have also offered printing of materials any time we need them. Their office is close to Dewey Square so Occupy Boston can call anytime copies are needed.
Neighborhoods
- Canvassing materials are being brainstormed and developed.
- Specific hot spots have been identified and there will be a mass canvass some time this weekend. More to come.
Community Organizations
- Has begun to put together a database of organizations in the city of Boston.
- Will begin cold calling to build coalitions very soon.
Campuses/Universities
- Has begun connecting various schools together in the Boston area. More to come.

Today, Friday, October 7th, a class of 16 students from Carroll School in Lincoln, accompanied by five faculty members, stopped by to observe Occupy Boston’s encampment. This 9th grade Humanities class is currently studying Henry David Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience. They visited the site to witness current-day instances of civil disobedience in action.
While at the encampment, they met with someone from each of the main working groups and observed the morning General Assembly. They then interviewed other participants and will be writing a blog entry as their assignment.
Many thanks to their teacher Kurt Moellering for facilitating such an eye-opening field trip for his students!
If anyone is aware of other classes or teachers who are interested in visiting the site, please contact the Outreach Committee.

We need people! If you are interested in getting involved with any of these Outreach working groups, please contact Daniel (info below).
