Decolonize To Liberate
*** UPCOMING EVENT! ***
Decolonize to Liberate Occupy Boston Community Gathering
Monday February 27th, 6p-9p.
Christ Church in Cambridge 0 Garden St. (Harvard Sq., map)
The Occupy Movement seeks to address the concerns of the 99%, to unify the majority who are being exploited to benefit the richest of the rich. But if we are to build a broad movement towards a just society that works for everyone, we must understand how this movement fits into a much older movement for justice, one that has been ongoing for hundreds of years.
The Decolonize to Liberate Working Group is hosting a Community Gathering of Occupy Boston on February 27th to help us connect and build together. Together, we will explore the history of this land and it’s people and how the goals and roots of the movement are critically intertwined with the ongoing struggles of indigenous people worldwide.
If you are a dedicated catalyst at Occupy Boston, a supporter, or just curious or completely new to the movement, we invite you to please join us for a unique community learning experience. This will be a great opportunity to connect, share food, words, and build.

The Decolonize to Liberate Working Group has been meeting since the early days of Dewey Square, when it introduced the Statement of Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples. We are continuously working to help each other shed the dominator ethos that came from colonialism, and to support the transformational work of the Occupy Movement.
Please join us on Monday, February 27th at 6p to learn what it means to “Decolonize Occupy” and how we can better create a global movement that works for everyone.
As a signal to the national “Occupy” movement and to members of First Nations (Indigenous Peoples) who have felt excluded by the colonialist language used to name this movement, it shall be declared that “Occupy Boston” aspires to “Decolonize Boston” with the guidance and participation of First Nations.
[Excerpt from the Statement of Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples introduced by this working group and passed by the Occupy Boston General Assembly on October 8, 2011. Read the full resolution, here.]
All are welcome to our regular weekly meetings. Half of the meeting is discussion/self-education to help us decolonize ourselves (see our resources section). Half of each meeting is for planning events and actions to help decolonize the movement.
