Decolonizers
Poncke Princen (November 21, 1925, The Hague – February 22, 2002, Jakarta)
For me the case of Poncke Princen shows how decolonization goes beyond race, etnicity, and nationality. Sent as a colonial soldier to the Dutch Indies, Princen deserted and joined the Indonesian freedom fighters' guerrilla war against the Dutch oppression. After the official recognition of the Indonesian independence in 1949 he was to become a dissident parlementarian in the new Indonesian government (in 1956) and a prominent human rights activist.
