Return to Citizens United to End Political Bribery

Citizens United to End Political Bribery (CUEPB)

In our first meeting, we discussed different steps that we need to take.

As the purpose of Occupy Boston is for democracy, and a major rot in our democracy is the corruption that comes along with corporate campaign donations, the purpose of the working group is to bring about an end to corporate money in politics.  We will focus on trying to write a law to ban corporate donations to Massachusetts politicians, but we will also address corporate money in federal politics.

We discussed names for our working group.  Citizens United Against Citizens United was settled upon, but other ideas are welcome.

A wiki page for the working group will be started and a link will be sent over email when it is.

We need to compile background research before we get started drafting legislation.  We need to find out what current Massachusetts campaign finance legislation is and current proposals.  We also need to find anything any other Occupy people have put out.  This information will be collected on the wiki page.

We need to spread the word to other people who might be interested especially if they have a background in law or politics.  We also need to compile a list of politicians in the state legislature who might be our allies and establish contact.  Also, if anyone knows someone in journalism who might have access to information about current abuses of the system in our state that would be super useful for when we want to raise public support.  I would suggest not posting this info to the wiki.

Anything else?  Feel free to discuss over email.
Also, is there a time next week people would like to meet?
